KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 (Bernama) - The Credit Counseling and Management Agency (AKPK) has assisted 53,000 individuals with debts totaling RM5 billion since 2006.
AKPK general manager (operations) Azman Hasim said the individuals were those who sought AKPK assistance to resolve their financial problems.
"There's an uptrend in the number of people who sought assistance in 2008 and 2009 due to the financial crisis, but from last year to this year, the number has stabilised," he told a press conference on the agency's POWER! roadshow programme here Wednesday.
He said 140,000 people had attended classes and seminars organised by AKPK up to last year, and 53,000 of them had been referred to the debt management programme for having serious financial problems.
Azman said the POWER! roadshow was a programme to equip young individuals and new borrowers with practical financial knowledge and skills as well as decision making tools to make sound financial decisions.
The programme, targeted at people below 30 years old, is scheduled to be held at seven locations, namely Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Melaka, Johor Baharu, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Kuala Terengganu.
