Zul Aswat Hamdan emerged tops after pitting his financial literacy skills against nine other Malaysians in three rounds of competition over two hours to win the grand prize to watch the World Cup in Brazil.
Equipped with good financial literacy skills, the 36-year-old software developer from Nilai beat the other finalists to win the Visa Financial Football Malaysia 2014 competition recently.
The football-themed game of wits was organised by Visa in partnership with Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK) and Visa’s bank partners – Aeon Credit Services, Bank Islam, MSN, Hong Leong Bank, Maybank, Public Bank and UOB.
In the interactive game, players were tested on their money management skills in terms of budgeting, savings, financial planning and decision-making through a set of multiple-choice questions with three difficulty levels to choose from.
Held online, players were awarded points based on correct answers, difficulty levels, as well as number of goals scored.
“The competition is a key part of our financial literacy drive to promote sound financial knowledge among Malaysians. I believe it could channel people’s passion for football into a meaningful way to learn about money management,” said Visa country manager (Malaysia) Ng Kong Boon.
AKPK CEO Koid Swee Lian said the competition serves as a fun platform to induce familiarisation to common banking jargons and practices.
“Having ample financial knowledge and skills can help people be financially prudent, and would better equip them with the necessary confidence when they enter into monetary transactions,” said Koid.
The 10 finalists were the top players on the leader board at the end of the five-week long online competition, held between Mac 12 and April 16, that had attracted some hundreds of participants.
Ng said Visa was pleased to sponsored the grand prize as the event coincides with this year’s World Cup.
First runner up Andrew Wong Kiong Chuang, 33, second runner up Kim Fatt Hee, 31, and seven other finalists also received prizes that comprised of Sony products as well as Adidas sports merchandise.
